Country Whites Weekend #3--Good Morning!

 

Welcome to Country Whites Weekend!

It’s plain and simple and oh, so sweet.

Embrace your country whites and share them here!

Good Morning, Everyone! 

The old Rooster just crowed. . . .

It's a brand new day. . . .and a brand new party!

Grab your coffee--or tea--and join us!

I don't know about you but my day doesn't start without a good cup of coffee. . .

I admit, John totally spoils me every morning. . . .He's up way before sunrise--making sure the coffee is hot and ready when my feet hit the floor. . . .

I try to keep him happy, too, with special treats every now and then. . . .

This morning I brought out Butterscotch Scones. . . .

Afterall, what's a party without something good and sweet and homemade?

He loves his scones heated and spread with homemade butter. . . .
(Calories aren't a worry for him, Ladies)

I use a basic, easy recipe from my Great Aunt Emma--
adding in John's choice of raisins, pecans, coconut, 

chocolate chips, butterscotch pieces, white chocolate, 

dried cranberries, or whatever is on hand.

For this morning, he chose butterscotch chips--says they're "wonderful"--

and insists that I share the recipe with you.

So, here it is, compliments of John and Aunt Emma. . .
It's "lovin' from the oven. . ."

 Scones

Combine 2 1/4 cups flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, pinch of salt. Cut in 1/2 cup softened butter with a pastry blender. In a separate bowl, combine 1/2 cup milk or cream, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. 
Add to flour mixture and mix just until the flour mixture is moist.
Add 1 cup--your choice-- raisins, currants, pecans, 
dried coconut,dried apples, candied fruit, chocolate chips, 
butterscotch pieces, or white chocolate, or what's on hand.
Be creative!
Scoop batter with a 1/4 cup measure onto a baking sheet 
and bake 12-15 minutes at 400 degrees.

Now that we have our coffee perked and scones in hand, it's time to party!

Mirror, Mirror

"Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall,

Who's the Fairest One of All?"

Remember that old rhyme?

How excited I was when I spotted the vintage mirror at a Missouri antique mall. . . .

The owner of the booth happened to be there, 

apologizing repeatedly for all the flaws in it.

I told her not to worry. . . .it's the flaws I love. . . .

She had a hard time understanding. . . .

ended up almost giving it to me because I loved it!

She was certain it had found a good home.

The wrinkles and age spots mattered not to me. 

Shabby, charming, defying time. . . .

I think it's previous owner couldn't see beyond the worn, stained frame 

to the possibilities at hand.

With a little cleaning and a quick whitewash, 

the character of this vintage piece began to shine through. 

After painting the Cottage Glass Cabinet earlier in the week, I knew exactly where I wanted the mirror to hang so that the cabinet would be beautifully reflected.

Inspired by Angie's style at Knick of Time

 a few old postcards and a leaf out of a gospel songbook seemed to be in order. . . .

I dressed the opposite side with strands of pearls and Aunt Mamie's 1950s brooch. . . .

This old worn, cast-aside lady still had life in her. . . .

Throughout her transformation that silly little rhyme
kept going round and round in my head.

Once I finished, I spoke to her out loud. . . .

"Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall,

You're the Fairest One of All!"

You know. . . .I think I heard her giggle. . . .

Cottage Glass Cabinet--What a Difference a Little Paint Makes

Yesterday was a rainy, stormy, gloomy day. . . .I began looking for something to brighten the dreariness. . . .which led me to this cottage glass cabinet. . . .

It's been a dark addition to the living room for four or five years. . . .I intended to paint it, but you know how that goes. . . .

Since we're working on the living room redo--as time permits--I decided I should brighten that corner of the room. . . .A little white paint did the trick. . . .

It's actually a lovely piece. . . .a handmade Arts & Crafts cottage style display, ca. 1920. . . .
The panes are blown glass. . . .the interior is painted beadboard. . . .I left the original soft green inside--a beautiful backdrop for my collections.

I love it's simplicity.

Before, the cabinet looked big, bulky and in the way. . . .Now, it works with it's surroundings perfectly.

Originally a bookcase, the shelves hold Granny's demitasse cup collection, Mom's crystal glassware, my collection of pedestal cake plates, and numerous family heritage pieces. . . .

It's so charming. . . . came from western Tennessee--out of a 1920s bungalow. . . .A friend of ours spotted it and knew it was just what we needed for the farmhouse. . . .That's the same friend who found the bathroom tub for us--being used as a flower bed. . . .

Making my day even brighter, John arrived home yesterday afternoon with a surprise--this precious framed print. . . .Isn't he the romantic? He says it's a younger version of us. . . .Such a sweetie.
I immediately displayed it on top of the newly painted cottage cabinet, along with the ironstone and a paint splattered basket. . . .

With a ladder and a vintage quilt, the cozy little corner is complete. . . .

I have paint left--beginning to eye a few other pieces. . . .There's a vintage mirror standing in another corner that I bought junkin' this weekend. . . .Hmmmm. . . .
