Welcome to a new feature at The Country Farm Home. . .
Country Sundays were once the highlight of many a hard week's labor.
It was a day to catch up with friends and family,
to rest and relax,
but most of all, to come together in worship.

Many times, after church services there was "dinner on the grounds". . . .
where long plank tables were set up outside under the trees
and pot luck dishes were there for the eating.

One of the cakes often baked for the church dinner was the Scripture Cake.
This old recipe, originally from England,
has been in my recipe collection for so many years,
I'd forgotten all about it.
In our church, these cakes often showed up
at Bake Sales for a money-making project.
A small card with the recipe was enclosed.

It's a delicious cake!
Want to try it?
Here's a translation. . . .but, be sure and look up the scriptures first!

Beat together until light and fluffy 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, and 2 tablespoons honey. Beat 6 egg yolks until light and add. Add sifted mixture of 1 1/2 cups sifted flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon cloves and a pinch of salt, in alternate portions with 1/2 cup milk. Stir in 2 cups chopped figs (apple will work, too), 2 cups raisins, 2 cups chopped almonds. Fold in 6 egg whites, beaten stiff. Bake the cake in well-greased 10 inch tube pan for 2 hours at 300 degrees.

. . . Sunday Blessings from the farmhouse. . .

  3. I've seen this recipe over the years and believe I have a copy in an old cook book but, I have never made it. Sunday afternoons are great for a nice rest after church. We have morning and evening services so we try to squeeze a nap in there in-between. "try". Doesn't always happen. Enjoy your Sunday afternoon. Pam

  4. I haven't seen a Scripture Cake recipe in decades! And dinner on the grounds--everyone used to argue about whether it should be on the grounds or on the ground! We soon learned which specialities were our favorites and lined up at that table first.

Every Sunday was special though, and my mother's Sunday dinners, while taken for granted then, were fabulous. Fried chicken and the fixings one Sunday and roast beef with fixings the next. And we hardly had time to read the comics before it was ready after getting home from church. How did she do that, I wonder? Of course, she didn't blog!

  5. What a great idea. I do not remember anyone ever doing a scripture cake when I was a kid, but then if there was cake, I was most interested in eating it. That still goes. Love hearing about the tradition.

  8. I liked seeing the recipe for Scripture Cake. It sounds good. But even more than the cake recipe, I enjoyed seeing the pictures of that little country church. When I saw the pictures, I was immediately transported to the very early 1960'a and the little country church near Fredericktown, Missouri which was my grandparents church. Wonderful memories. Thanks for the quick time travel trip and a delicious recipe!
