Earlier, I thought I'd gather up the gardening tools and head out to the flower beds for a little winter clean-up. . . .What a surprise I had when I opened the door! It might LOOK warm, but it certainly is NOT. . . .
Maybe you recognize it from a post back in December. . . .I haven't had the time to work with it until now. . . .In fact, John has had the "green machine" in his workshop for a cleaning and lube job. . . .Now, it's my turn. . . .
I think it's a Singer Tiny Tailor--but can't seem to find a whole lot of information. . . .
I already own three black Tiny Tailors. . . .which have become very collectible. . . .Quilters love them, as well as crafters, because they are small enough to carry with you and sturdy enough to stitch like a regular sized machine. . . .
I've tried Googling to find out some information. . . .So far, not much luck. . . .
They were manufactured in Canada. . . .I think around 1954. . . .The Serial Number is different from anything I found on the Singer website. . . .
I thought maybe one of you might have some information?
It's a "dandy" little machine. . . .
For my first project, I'm sew, sew, sewing a basketful of doilies and embroidered pieces into----
Well, you'll just have to wait and see. . . .
But, you'll still have to wait and see. . . .
I'll have the house to myself for the next few days. . . .Plenty of time to finish the sewing projects. . . .I think I'll set the Tiny Tailor right in FRONT of the window. . . .That way I can at least pretend I'm outside. . . .while keeping as warm as that sun looks!

ReplyDeleteHi there, Im a new reader and follower to your blog.. I LOVE this tiny machine and I can't believe the price you paid for it.. I would have grabbed it too!..I live in South Carolina and the other day (last week one day) I was thinkin about going outside and atleast trying to clean up my planter boxes on my porch. Well life got in the way and I put it off. By Saturday night it was SNOWING! We don't usually get snow here. I thought ah well, it will all be gone in a few hours.Sunday morning I left the house about 730am for church thinking it would be nice out? It was COLD and everything was covered in ICE.. So like you, I will just have to 'play' with things inside until Spring arrives which I hope to be soon.

So cute! I think my sister has the some one. I will have to look at it again. I do remember it being made in Canada....... I will poke around and see what I can find.
ReplyDeleteYesterday morning the sun was shining so bright and the all the birds singing in the trees. So lovely! And by the afternoon it was gray and rainy. Now it is around 15 degrees! We did see a Robin last week, so Spring can't be too far away.....
Just want you to know that you are the reason I spent an hour on Ebay and the internet looking for a green Tiny tailor....because I love yours so much! I couldn't find one...:(...and the really crazy thing is......I don't know how to sew....:)

ReplyDeleteOh Dru...I love old sewing machines and have several old ones in my sewing room. I used to work at a quilt shop and we also sold sewing machines. We had several old ones on display in the shop.
ReplyDeleteI did some searching online about your machine, but I couldn't find anything either except that someone is selling one just like it on Etsy for $140.00...you got a great deal or should I say steal for $10.00!!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh Dru, what a treasure! How did I miss the original post. I love vintage sewing machines. Have a few, but that green is wonderful. What a great price too! Can't wait to see what you are up to sweetie. It was sunshiny here yesterday too. Love it, but my lawn is still covered in snow. I have an old featherweight. My youngest accidently knocked it off my table and I need to go get the cord fixed. They certainly are nice to haul around.

I have a Singer "Featherweight" that looks just like your little machine. My Mother gave it to me last summer. I treasure it and love that it weighs just a few pounds. I haven't posted a photo of it yet, but will soon.

I have a machine just like yours and consider it one of my little treasures. I bought it from a friend who inherited it from her aunt.
ReplyDeleteThis is just the neatest little machine! Just like the one I used many years ago except it was mounted in an oak sewing cabinet that folded open to form a table. My friend's was portable and I envied her ability to move it from room to room. Your pictures flooded my memory with the humming of the machine, the beauty and smell of the wood and the smell of the little can of oil used to lube it to keep it humming along and the little wooden accessories box. Thanks for the memories!

Love your find! And if I am not mistaken that looks like a Singer 185 j or k. Most likely a j. It seems from what I have found so far, that the k was made in Great Britain. I have both that I have had around needing attention and I have got one up and running and working on the j. They are called a 3/4 machine. They seem to run between 150.00 and 200.00 and from my readings, they sell quickly at that price. I have read that parting one out could get double that, but I cant stand that idea, unless there is no way to save it!!!! Then I can placate the loss with the idea it will live on in other machines. I know Im a goof! But I am a vintage sewing machine loving goof! Congrats on your find.
